onGlow, the self-illuminating textile by Grupo Morón

Grupo Morón, in its ongoing commitment to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, presents onGlow – the self-illuminating textile, a photoluminescent fabric that glows in the dark and produces light without the need for any electrical source.

Natural luminescence is a well-known and studied phenomenon for more than 100 years. Depending on its origin, it can be classified in different ways, such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, electroluminescence, thermoluminescence, chemiluminescence, or bioluminescence, the latter being produced for example by certain deep-sea marine species.

According to the European Commission, “photoactive” materials are expected to become one of the key technologies for future development. These technologies are designed to reduce overall energy demand, as they allow large amounts of light to be generated with very low or even zero energy consumption. In other words, free light emission.

onGlow from Grupo Morón incorporates natural, non-harmful luminescent pigments into textile materials. Due to their molecular composition, these fabrics are able to absorb energy from visible and ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible light once the excitation source disappears. This means that if the material is charged with daylight, it can emit light for several hours during the night.

This effect can have many important practical applications. For example, it can be highly useful in industrial safety and personal protective equipment (PPE). A worker wearing luminous footwear, clothing, helmets, or vests can be seen by colleagues when moving from a well-lit area to a darker or completely dark environment, significantly improving safety.

And this is already a reality. OnMicro Glow is a photoluminescent microfiber developed by Grupo Morón to be used as an outer material in the manufacturing of safety footwear, protective gear, and professional-use products. It also fully complies with the European standard UNE EN ISO 20345:2012.
